Driving from Tivat Airport to Podgorica — 90 Minutes Inland
There are two ways to reach the capital from TIV. The quicker is the Sozina tunnel toll road: drive south toward Budva, branch inland at Virpazar, and pass through the 4.2 km tunnel onto the Podgorica plain. Journey time: about 90 minutes; toll roughly 3.50 EUR. The alternative is the mountain road over Lovcen — spectacular scenery but allow 2.5 hours owing to hairpins and limited overtaking opportunities.
Podgorica is built at the meeting point of six rivers (Moraca, Ribnica, Zeta, Sitnica, Mareza, Cijevna) and is home to around 170,000 people. Its streetscape is a timeline of the country's past: Ottoman clock towers, Austro-Hungarian frontages, Yugoslav concrete housing, and modern glass offices lining Bulevar Svetog Petra Cetinjskog.
As Montenegro's administrative and commercial centre, Podgorica sees far fewer tourists than the coast — which translates to cheaper meals, hassle-free parking, and walk-in restaurant availability. With a hire car it makes either a comfortable day trip or a practical overnight en route to the northern highlands.
What to See in Podgorica
The Millennium Bridge — a cable-stayed crossing over the Moraca — is the city's most recognisable structure. On the south bank, the old Turkish Quarter (Stara Varos) has narrow lanes, a historic clock tower, and a handful of traditional eateries. Delta City mall on the northern ring road carries international brands, a cinema, and covered parking. Fresh produce hunters should visit the Green Market, open daily beside the main square.

Excursions from Podgorica
Skadar Lake
Thirty minutes south via the Virpazar road lies the Balkans' largest lake, shared between Montenegro and Albania. Boat tours leave from Virpazar village into a national park that supports pelican colonies and more than 260 bird species. Pack binoculars and insect repellent if visiting in summer.
Danilovgrad and the Zeta Valley
A tranquil riverside town 25 minutes west of the capital on the E762. Expect small river beaches along the Zeta, a couple of fish restaurants, and the Zdrebaonik monastery 5 km to the north. An unhurried half-day getaway from the city.
Zabljak
Zabljak sits at 1,450 m in the Durmitor range, 170 km north of Podgorica on the E65. Winter brings skiing at Savin Kuk; summer offers Tara Canyon rafting, Black Lake walks, and the Durmitor ring road. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the drive depending on conditions, and refuel in Podgorica — filling stations thin out north of Kolasin.
