Rental rules worth knowing

  • A full driving licence held for the qualifying period is required.
  • Younger or newly qualified drivers may face a surcharge or a higher deposit.

  • Add a second driver at booking so both are covered.

Why cover matters on Montenegro roads

Montenegro's coast and mountain roads are beautiful but demanding: narrow lanes, tight switchbacks, busy summer traffic and the odd unlit tunnel. Minor scrapes in tight car parks and on village streets are the most common claims, which is exactly what the higher tiers are designed to take the worry out of.

If you are driving the Lovcen serpentines, the Tara canyon roads or simply parking daily in crowded resorts, the extra protection usually pays for the peace of mind. Choose the level that matches where you plan to drive.

Insurance and deposit FAQ

Quick answers on what is covered, deposits, no-deposit options, young drivers and cross-border cover. Cover, deposit and cross-border options are all chosen at checkout, so you can see the cost before you commit.

What insurance is included with a Montenegro car rental?

Third-party liability cover is included by law on every rental. Collision and theft waivers are added on the higher tiers, which you choose at booking.

What is the difference between the tiers?

Higher tiers add a collision damage waiver, lower the excess, include theft and reduce or remove the deposit. The Full Coverage Plus tier carries zero excess and no deposit.

How does the deposit work?

A deposit is held on a card at pickup and released after the car is returned in order. No-deposit listings avoid the hold altogether.

Can I rent without a deposit?

Yes. Filter for no-deposit cars, or choose the Full Coverage Plus tier, which removes the deposit.

Is cross-border cover included?

No. Taking the car into another country needs the supplier informed and the cross-border fee arranged in advance.
