Do you actually need an SUV in Montenegro?
For most visitors, the honest answer is no. Montenegro's coast road and all the main routes are fully paved, and a normal compact or standard car handles them comfortably. Kotor, Budva, the Bay of Kotor and the Luštica peninsula are all fine in a regular car. Luštica's roads are paved but narrow and winding, so a compact is actually easier to place on tight bends than a wide SUV.
Where extra height genuinely helps is off the tarmac. If your plan involves unpaved mountain tracks, back roads into national parks, or rough lanes down to remote beaches, more ground clearance and traction make a real difference. The Lovćen National Park back roads, and tracks around Durmitor and Bjelasica, are where a higher car (and sometimes a true 4x4) starts to matter. Some of those tracks are genuinely rough.
SUV versus a true 4x4: know the difference
This catches a lot of people out. Most cars badged as SUVs in the rental pool are front-wheel-drive crossovers. They sit higher and carry more, but they drive the front wheels only, just like an ordinary hatchback. That is perfectly good for paved roads, light gravel and everyday touring, but it is not the same as all-wheel drive.
Genuine 4x4 and AWD cars are a much smaller part of the fleet. If you truly need power to all four wheels, for rough unpaved tracks or for winter driving in the mountains, book a real 4x4 specifically and tell us that is what you need. Do not assume that any car labelled SUV will pull you out of trouble, because most of them will not.

Do I need a 4x4 in Montenegro?

A 4x4 only earns its place if you are heading onto unpaved mountain tracks, into remote parts of the national parks, or driving in the mountains in winter.

Can an SUV handle the Durmitor and mountain roads?
The paved mountain roads are fine in any car, and a raised crossover is comfortable on them. For unpaved back roads and rough tracks around Durmitor and Bjelasica, extra clearance helps and a true 4x4 is better again. Note that the Durmitor ring road usually closes in winter, and mountain areas around Žabljak and Kolašin get real snow, so plan for the season.
Is an SUV good for the Luštica beaches?
You do not need one. The roads across the Luštica peninsula are paved, just narrow and winding, so a compact or standard car is comfortable and easier to place on tight bends than a wide SUV. An SUV is fine there too, but it is not required for the beaches.
Do I need winter tyres?
Yes, when it applies. From 15 November to 1 April, winter tyres with at least 4mm of tread are legally required in Montenegro. If you are heading into the mountains in that window, a higher car fitted with winter tyres is a sensible combination, and dipped headlights are required day and night all year.
