Crossing Borders from Montenegro: What Rental Drivers Need to Know

Green Cards, queue times, and the crossings that matter

Border Crossing with a Rental Car

Montenegro shares borders with Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Albania, and Kosovo. All five can be crossed with a rental car — provided you notify the rental company at booking.

The key document is the Green Card: a certificate proving your rental insurance is valid outside Montenegro. Without it, you'll be turned back at the border.

What is a Green Card?

A Green Card (officially the International Motor Insurance Certificate) extends your rental car's insurance coverage to other countries. It's a physical document that must be in the car. Most rental companies provide it free if requested at booking.

Main Border Crossings

  • Debeli Brijeg (Croatia) — 40 km from TIV. The main coastal crossing. Summer queues: 30–60 min.
  • Sitnica (Bosnia) — via Trebinje. Quieter crossing, rarely more than 10 min wait.
  • Sukobin (Albania) — via Ulcinj. Coastal crossing, moderate traffic.
  • Dobrakovo (Serbia) — northern route via E65. Moderate traffic year-round.
  • Kula (Kosovo) — via Rozaje. Remote crossing, minimal waits.

Tips for Smooth Crossings

  • Have passports, Green Card, and vehicle registration ready before joining the queue
  • Summer weekends at Debeli Brijeg can hit 2-hour queues — leave early or go late
  • Croatia uses kunas (or EUR since 2023). Bosnia uses convertible marks. Serbia uses dinars.
  • Check your mobile data plan — roaming charges change at each border
