Rental Car Extras at TIV
Most rental companies at Tivat Airport offer a menu of add-ons you can book alongside the car. Some are essential (child seats if you're travelling with kids), some are convenient (GPS), and some are a waste of money (WiFi hotspots when your phone already has data).
Here's what's available, what each costs, and whether it's worth the daily fee.
Child Seats
Montenegro law requires children under 135 cm in height to use an appropriate child restraint. Rental companies at TIV offer three types:
- Infant carrier (Group 0+, birth to ~12 months) — €3–€5/day, max €30–€50 per rental
- Child seat (Group 1, 9 months to ~4 years) — €3–€5/day, max €30–€50 per rental
- Booster seat (Group 2/3, 4–12 years) — €2–€4/day, max €25–€40 per rental
Book in advance — availability is limited, especially in summer. If you're bringing your own ISOFIX seat from home, check the vehicle listing to confirm ISOFIX anchor points are fitted. Most mid-size and above have them; some economy cars don't.
Tip
Bringing your own seat from home is free and guarantees availability. Airlines allow car seats as checked luggage at no extra charge (or gate-check for free).
GPS / Sat-Nav
GPS units cost €5–€8/day, capped at €40–€60 per rental. The devices are usually TomTom or Garmin with Montenegro maps pre-loaded.
Our recommendation: skip it. Google Maps or Waze on your phone works perfectly in Montenegro, including offline maps. Download the Montenegro offline map before you fly, and you have better routing than any rental GPS unit — for free.
Tip
If you do rent a GPS, check it has the Vrmac tunnel and Sozina tunnel on its maps. Older units sometimes route you the long way around.
Roof Racks & Ski Boxes
Roof racks cost €8–€12/day. Ski boxes (winter only) are €10–€15/day. Both need to be requested at booking — they're not available on the day.
Useful if you're bringing bikes to ride along the bay, or ski equipment for Kolasin/Zabljak in winter. Otherwise, the boot space on a mid-size car handles most luggage needs.
Snow Chains
Snow chains are €5–€8/day, or sometimes included free in winter rentals. Montenegro law requires chains to be carried (not necessarily fitted) on certain mountain roads from November to April.
If you're driving to Zabljak, Kolasin, or over the Krstac pass in winter, you need chains in the boot. The rental company will show you how to fit them at pickup if you ask.
WiFi Hotspot
Portable WiFi devices cost €5–€10/day. They provide a mobile hotspot for multiple devices.
Skip this. A local Montenegro SIM card costs €5–€10 for the whole trip with generous data. Buy one at the kiosk in TIV arrivals. Or just use EU roaming if you have an EU phone plan — Montenegro is not in the EU but many providers include it anyway.
Worth It vs Skip It
Worth booking
- Child seats — book if needed, or bring your own for free
- Snow chains — essential for winter mountain driving
- Roof rack — only if you're bringing bikes or bulky gear
Skip
- GPS — use your phone with offline maps instead
- WiFi hotspot — buy a local SIM or use roaming
- Additional driver — some companies include this free, check before paying
