TIV Airport to Sveti Stefan by Car
Sveti Stefan is the photograph that sells Montenegro — a fortified island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, surrounded by pink sand and clear water. It sits 30 minutes south of Tivat Airport on the Adriatic highway.
The drive itself is straightforward: exit TIV, take the main road south through Budva, and continue along the coast. But the stops along the way are what make this a proper half-day trip rather than a quick transfer.
The Route from TIV
From the airport, turn right onto the main road toward Budva. Pass through the Jaz tunnel and follow the coast past Becici. After Budva old town, continue south on the M2.3 coastal road. Sveti Stefan appears on your left after about 25 km.
Worth Stopping For
- Jaz Beach — 15 min from TIV. A long pebbly beach with a mountain backdrop. Free parking on the road above, paid lot closer to the beach. Good for a morning swim before heading south.
- Budva Old Town — 20 min from TIV. Park outside the walls and walk through the Venetian-era gates. Coffee on the citadel terrace has one of the best sea views on the coast.
- Przno — 25 min from TIV. A quiet fishing village with waterfront restaurants. Grilled squid and local wine at Konoba Langust is the move. This is where locals eat.
- Milocer Park — Just north of Sveti Stefan. A pine-shaded park leading down to the Queen's Beach. Free to walk through, the beach itself charges admission in summer.
The Viewpoint
The classic photograph is taken from the road above. As you drive south, you'll see a small car park on the left just before the descent to the causeway. Pull in here — this is the shot. Late afternoon light is best, when the sun catches the western face of the island.
Parking at Sveti Stefan
There's a small free car park at the top of the hill and a paid lot closer to the beach (around €5 in summer). The island itself is a private Aman resort — guests only. But the public beach on the mainland side is open to everyone and costs €30–€50 per day for two sunbeds in peak season.
Tips
- Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the Budva traffic corridor
- The public beach north of the causeway is cheaper than the south side
- Przno is better value for lunch than the restaurants near Sveti Stefan
- Return via the inland road through Pastrovici villages for a different view
