Porto Montenegro to Dubrovnik: The Ultimate Cross-Border Drive

Tivat to Dubrovnik by Car

Dubrovnik sits 90 km northwest of Tivat Airport. The drive takes about 90 minutes via the Adriatic highway, including one border crossing at Debeli Brijeg.

This is one of the most popular day trips from Tivat — and the reason cross-border cover is the most requested add-on at TIV pickup.

The Border Crossing

Debeli Brijeg is the main crossing between Montenegro and Croatia. In summer, expect 30–60 minute queues at peak times (10am–2pm). Leave early to beat the crowd. Have passports and Green Card insurance ready.

Documents Required

Passport for all passengers, vehicle registration, Green Card insurance (provided by the rental company — check it's in the glovebox before you leave TIV). EU/EEA nationals can use national ID cards.

The Route

From Porto Montenegro, drive north through Herceg Novi and follow signs to the Croatian border at Debeli Brijeg. After the crossing, continue on the D8 coastal highway through Cavtat to Dubrovnik.

Tips

  • Leave by 7am in summer to reach Dubrovnik before 9am
  • Park at the Dubrovnik cable car station — cheaper than old town
  • Return before 6pm to avoid the evening border queue
  • The Neum corridor (Bosnian section of highway) is an alternative route — quicker but two extra border crossings
