Five Drives Worth the Tank

Tivat Airport puts you in the middle of Montenegro's coast, but the real magic is 30 minutes to two hours inland. These five day trips are impossible by bus and unforgettable by car.

Lustica Peninsula

20 minutes south of TIV. Empty beaches, olive groves, and the Blue Grotto cave reachable by boat from Krasici. Pack a picnic — there are few restaurants.

Cetinje & Lovcen National Park

90 minutes via the Budva road. Montenegro's old royal capital sits at 670m altitude. Continue up to the Njegos Mausoleum at the summit of Mount Lovcen for views of the entire coast.

Skadar Lake

Two hours via Podgorica. The largest lake in the Balkans, shared with Albania. Boat tours through water lilies, wine tasting at Crmnica vineyards, and pelican colonies.

Sveti Stefan

30 minutes south. The iconic island hotel connected by a narrow causeway. The public beach next to it is one of Montenegro's best. Stop at Przno for lunch on the way.

Durmitor National Park

Three hours north via Niksic. Black Lake, Tara Canyon (the deepest in Europe), and the Durmitor Ring road. An overnight trip is better, but a dawn start can make it a long day trip.
